Director’s Notes

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “exonerated” as:

  1. “To relieve of a responsibility, obligation or hardship.”

  2. “To clear from accusation or blame.”

These six people that you are going to meet tonight were all sentenced to die for crimes they did not commit and then exonerated. Their stories are very similar but also completely different. But the one thing that they all have in common is that these people all had hope. Hope for their future and the future of the world in which they lived.

Vashon Repertory Theatre was founded on the belief that the arts and theatre in particular can change lives. Our mission is produce thought-provoking, intimate, story-driven theatre that brings to light issues meaningful to our time and place on Earth. We hope that after seeing this performance tonight, you will strive to change the inequities that exist in our society because of class, race, and gender and to make a difference in your community.

I want to especially thank the Vashon Standing Up for Racial Justice team that has helped to promote this show. If you want to know more about the work of this group, and of The Innocence Project and the Freedom Project, you can go to their websites:

Thanks for being here tonight and sharing this experience.

Charlotte Tiencken, Director
Vashon Repertory Theatre Producing Artistic Director

Cast

  • Kenny has moved between acting and playing music as his creative pursuits. His first role was in the musical Hair as Berger, and has worked with West Seattle’s Driftwood Theatre Company playing roles in Line, Asleep on the Wind, California Suite, and Radio on the Prairie. As a musician, he’s performed in the Seattle production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. This will be his debut performance in the Vashon Center for the Arts theater, and he is thankful for the opportunity. He would like to dedicate this performance to his father Lloyde Alton Jr.: a public defender for Pierce County and an advocate for abolishing the death penalty.

  • Meghan Ames (she/they) is proud to be performing for the first time at Vashon Center for the Arts. They have performed previously in Vashon Repertory Theatre's production of The Tempest as Miranda and voiced the titular character in Take A Stand Theatre's performance of the radio play Penny Tahlequah and the Ms. Olsen Incident. They'd like to thank the cast and crew for creating space for important topics like those found in The Exonerated and look forward to the conversations that will progress us toward the understanding of our justice system and shared history.

  • Rowin is excited to be back on the stage with Vashon Repertory Theatre and is especially humbled to be in such a powerful production. Rowin has previously been seen in Minneapolis Children's Theatre Company's (CTC) productions of Cinderella, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Matilda the Musical. Rowin had the privilege of being the 2018-2019 Performing Apprentice at CTC, and over the span of the year understudied for productions Last stop on Market Street and The Hobbit. Rowin resides in Federal Way with his beautiful wife and their two fur babies.

  • Alma is an award-winning playwright, poet, storyteller, and producer with roots in Washington, DC and New York. She is the Artistic/Producing Director of The Slate Theater: an interdisciplinary arts space located in Seattle, Washington; and Brown Soul Productions: an organization committed to nurturing and amplifying the voices of women of color through the development and production of creative new work. Alma graduated from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC. She has a BFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in Dramatic Writing and an MFA in Arts Leadership from Seattle University. Her body of work includes Champagne James, The Macro Evolution of…, Amok, and Privileged.

  • A performer, playwright, and teacher, Maria appeared in Vashon Repertory Theatre’s production of Savage/Love. She was one of the lead writers for UMO’s FAIL BETTER: Beckett Moves UMO. When COVID cancelled its ACT Theatre premiere, Maria transformed her epic play VIC into the seven-episode audio drama VIC: The Life and Times of Victoria Woodhull, Future Presidentess. In 2018, Maria toured 23 cities in Right Angle Entertainment’s production of PostSecret: The Show. Her solo works Pu’uhonua (place of refuge) and See Me Naked toured the US and Canada and garnered Best of Fest honors at several festivals. She was nominated for a Gregory Award for her work as Emily Dickinson in Sound Theatre Company's production of The Belle of Amherst. Maria has worked with multiple companies in Seattle including theatre simple, Open Circle, Live Girls, and more. She has been a joyful teaching artist throughout her career and served as Artistic Director for Rainier Valley Youth Theatre in Seattle and Playwrights Project in San Diego.

  • Ronnie is happy to join the cast for this production of The Exonerated. Ronnie is a Seattle-based actor, who attended college at the University of Montana for Acting and Vocal Performance. He also studied under Robin Smith from Cornish, taking the full progression of Freehold classes including Intensive Meisner. He performs at theatres all over the Seattle area and received a nomination for the Gypsy Awards for Supporting Male in Caged Bird at Book-it Repertory Theatre.

  • Christopher Kehoe is a theatre actor, playwright, director, and stage manager. He has performed in over fifty productions with more than twenty companies, devised original plays created in-ensemble, and produced his own work called "brilliant" by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and "genius" by Minnesota Playlist. He’s performed with Vashon Repertory Theatre in The Tempest (Ferdinand), and other favorite roles include Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, Nick Arnstein in Funny Girl, Olivia in Twelfth Night, Chris in All My Sons, Parolles in All’s Well That Ends Well, and everyone in the one-man show Monster by Daniel MacIvor. Christopher has studied long-form improvisation at Brave New Institute, physical performance and devising technique with The SITI Company, Sandbox Theatre, Odin Teatret, and artists from the former Theatre de la Jeune Lune, and game and clown at Ecole Philippe Gaulier. He holds an MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre from Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre.

  • When he's not teaching in Tacoma or pickleballing with friends, Harris enjoys the magical realism of Márquez and a mocha banana milkshake. He hails from NoFroHo (North Frog Holler) but keeps connections in Boston, just in case. You may have seen Harris in shows from 14/48, Shakespeare in the Park, Vashon Repertory Theatre, Drama Dock, Church of Great Rain, and Resistance Productions, including It Can’t Happen Here, All in the Timing, The War of the Worlds, and The Diary of Anne Frank. He performs stand-up comedy at Home Sweet Home, Bob's Java Jive, and the Red Bike. Harris extends thanks and gratitude to the good people of the Innocence Project, the Equal Justice Initiative, Amnesty International, and artists, educators, and human rights workers around the world for their ongoing, inspiring commitment to uncovering justice, and sometimes recovering it.

  • Dedra began her acting career at the esteemed American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC. From there, she performed in many off-off and off-Broadway shows, television shows, and commercials. She moved to Los Angeles, tiring of east coast weather, where she changed course, becoming a professional makeup artist for over 20 years. Upon moving back to the PNW, she reignited her passion for the stage, appearing in Take A Stand’s production My Mother, Myself, Drama Dock’s female version of The Odd Couple, and several staged readings. She’s thrilled to be working with Vashon Repertory Theatre and to be contributing to telling this most important story.

  • Anthony is excited for you to see this play. It may be uncomfortable, but that doesn't make it a less valuable exchange of energy. Previous Vashon Repertory Theatre roles include Caliban in The Tempest of summer 2021, and part of the group-sourced, pandemic-streamed Savage/Love ensemble. Other Vashon credits include roles in Hearts of Vashon and A Child’s Christmas in Wales. When she’s not dabbling in show biz, Susan is a freelance writer/journalist on Vashon. She is especially honored to be part of The Exonerated because it is a high quality piece that addresses one of her other passions—criminal justice reform. She is most grateful to Charlotte Tiencken and to the local SURJ Criminal Justice Action Team for bringing this moving play to Vashon.
